Electronic waste (e-waste) is quickly becoming the fastest growing contributor of municipal waste in the country.
A few quick facts:
- 95% of monitor components are reusable.
- 250 million computers were destined to become obsolete in 2005.
- Over 2 million tons of e-waste is put in landfills each year.
In a new report for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), analysts estimate that the amount of e-waste in US landfills will grow fourfold in the next few years.
Discarded computers are hazardous waste - and when dumped into landfills or improperly recycled, pose a hazard to the environment and human health. |
